Post-harvest and fisheries systems

Protect the value of a catch or harvest all the way to the buyer.

01 / Context

Indonesia overview

Loss reduction starts by following the product. Handling, waiting, grading, drying, ice availability and transport may each affect the price realised by a producer. A new machine cannot resolve a weak buyer relationship or a handling practice that damages quality earlier in the chain.

02 / Public initiatives

Government direction and progress

The fishing-village programme described by KKP in 2025 combines landing infrastructure, storage, supplies and training. Its integrated approach makes operating arrangements as relevant as physical facilities; local implementation and operator readiness still need checking.

What businesses and communities need

The business decision

Buyers and processors need predictable quality and volume. Cooperatives and aggregators need enough throughput to cover staff, transport and equipment costs. Interview each participant to understand rejection criteria, payment timing and who captures the value of better quality.

The people using the solution

For fishers and farmers, the meaningful measure is net income after added fees and labour. Shared facilities need transparent access and decision rules, particularly when suppliers differ in scale or bargaining power.

04 / Proteka’s assessment

Where solutions can make a difference

Start with a specific loss point and compare a simple operational change with an equipment investment. A community-scale pilot should track quality, sale price, participation and income distribution across a season.

Questions a useful project should resolve

  • Where is value lost, and who bears that loss?
  • Will buyers pay for the proposed quality improvement?
  • Can a shared facility operate through low-volume periods?

These are opportunities to investigate, not confirmed market demand. A field study should test the customer, operating conditions and commercial assumptions.

How Proteka can contribute

Direct, hands-on experience

Our direct experience includes field-surveyed loss reduction, community operating models and fisher income economics. We connect field evidence with a practical business plan and locally agreed responsibilities.
